Happy Exelauno Day

My nephew Ben Casselman has been reminding us on  twitter and facebook that today is Exelauno Day. If like Ben you are a graduate of Roxbury Latin School, Boston, USA, you’ll know what this is about.

The Greek verb ‘exelauno’ appears repeatedly in Xenophon’s Anabasis and means ‘to march forth’.  RL has always been hot on classics which is why it celebrates 4 March as Exelauno Day. Initially Greek students at RL were let off homework, but now the exemption applies to all classicists and there is much jollity and festivity on this day.

We had no such luck at Benenden.
