Look out for lapwings!

As I came back in the dimpsy from a snowy walk around Turville in the Chilterns yesterday, there was a tractor at work in the field, pulling out the hedge to make way for fencing.

It is not something I welcome, but my alarm increased when I saw an agitated lapwing running around close to the tractor wheels, and another one flying around nearby.

Fortunately it is a bit early for nesting, and I know that lapwings do tend to panic, but it felt just a little close for comfort.

Even closer

I hope the tractor driver knew they were there.
